Dynamic pressure calibrator from EMPIR project enables traceable calibrations

Gas pipeline

Calibrator based on technology developed in this project has been sold to a major European calibration service provider

EMPIR project Development of measurement and calibration techniques for dynamic pressures and temperatures (17IND07, DynPT) is working to develop traceable calibration and measurement methods for dynamic temperature and pressure for use in industry applications where accurate dynamic measurements is a key requirement, such as combustion engines, safety testing and manufacturing.

Significant achievements from the project include:

  • A dynamic pressure calibrator based on the technology developed within this project was sold to a major accredited calibration laboratory in Europe. This will enable the calibration laboratory to offer traceable calibration services for dynamic pressure as the first laboratory in the world.
  • A dynamic thermometer system developed at NPL was thoroughly tested at dedicated dynamic testing facilities at NPL (pyrotechnics facility), RISE (dynamic shutter tests) and KTH (shock tube tests). The speed of the system was validated and the performance under application-specific conditions (clean high-speed combustion) was examined.
  • A sensor developed at VTT MIKES has been successfully validated and the results were published in the proceedings of SMSI2020 conference.

The unique pressure sensing technology developed within this project has attracted much commercial interest and negotiations are ongoing on commercialising the technology.

Project Coordinator Richard Högström from VTT MIKES said

‘As an outcome of this project, SI traceability for dynamic measurements of pressure and temperature in demanding industrial applications has been established through development of new dynamic calibration and measurement techniques and sensors, which will significantly improve the quality of measurements and thus support the innovation potential and competitiveness of European industry’.

This EMPIR project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
