RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Resource management focuses protecting and using resources such as water, materials or energy, in a sustainable manner and ensure that resources won’t be depleted and are still available in the future. The Unites Nation’s sustainability goal 12 ‘responsible consumption and production’ focuses on sustainable consumption and production patterns with the goal to significantly reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse as well as halve per capita global food waste by 2030. These objectives rely on a traceable metrological network to develop strategies to manage resources sustainably.

EURAMET supported a range of resource management projects such as ‘Metrology for the recycling of Technology Critical Elements to support Europe's circular economy agenda’ (20IND01, MetroCycleEU). Additionally, several European Metrology Networks are working on implementing sustainable resource use, such as the European Metrology Network for Safe and Sustainable Food.

Validating ion engines for interplanetary travel

Curiosity led exploration of space has driven the development of over 2000 technologies including integrated circuits, lightweight insulation and automated credit card transactions. However, overcoming this harsh environment requires state-of-the art technology which presents its own new measurement challenges. This is especially true for interplanetary travel where high vehicle fuel efficiency is required for the long distances involved, maximising mission payloads and the amount of science that can be performed.

Better heat-treatment process control

Temperature measurements above 1000 °C are difficult to make but essential for a wide range of industrial processes, many of which require close temperature control to be effective. Laser hardening at high temperatures is used to harden the surface of components used in the automotive, aerospace, power generation, construction and many other sectors, but it is hard to make reliable surface temperature measurements due to the challenging measurement conditions.
